Growing Success: Virak’s story as an Agricultural Pioneer in Cambodia

This paper highlights the potential Cambodian pioneers who have built businesses based on innovative and creative ideas, with the aim of fostering innovation and entrepreneurial skills among Cambodians to advance the agricultural sector.

About Keat Farm Cambodia

Mr. Bun Chan Virak, a 28-year-old entrepreneur, is the owner of Keat Farm Cambodia based in Kampong Chhnang Province. He allocated 20 hectares of his 50-hectare property to growing plants and the remaining 30 hectares to raising animals.

Driven by a passion for animal welfare and environmental responsibility, Keat Farm Cambodia is dedicated to providing a better life for its animals while minimizing its environmental impact, ultimately benefiting both the farm’s customers and the farm itself.

Organic Farming and Diversification

Through organic farming practices, Keat Farm Cambodia has steadily increased its livestock from just 11 sheep and 8 pigs to approximately 1,000 sheep and 300 pigs. Notably, sheep farming is a pioneering endeavor in Cambodia, and their pasture-based pig rearing further distinguishes them from other farmers. Over time, their product range has expanded to include ducks, chickens, quail, rabbits, earthworms, goat milk, banana blossoms, and coconuts. “We sell around 900 pigs annually, and our goal is to quadruple this number.”, Mr. Virak states.

Embracing Challenges and Continuous Learning

Despite the common belief that agricultural expertise is essential for successful farming, Mr. Virak’s story demonstrates otherwise. He remained determined to persevere, reminding himself, “Don’t be afraid of failure; be afraid of not trying.” With an unwavering willingness to embrace challenges and a continuous learning mindset, he has successfully established and expanded his farm despite having no prior knowledge or experience in the agricultural field.

Sharing Knowledge and Fostering a Supportive Learning Environment

Mr. Virak actively engages in conducting live videos and maintaining a Facebook page where he shares technical expertise and addresses common challenges faced by farmers. Through these live sessions, he demonstrates practical solutions and fosters a supportive learning environment. His efforts have reached thousands of individuals, directly imparted knowledge and indirectly contributing to the success of countless farmers.

Message to the Young Generation

Having a dream is the cornerstone of success, regardless of your current level of expertise. Take time to discover what sparks your passion and ignites your aspirations. Mr. Virak believes in the limitless potential of every individual and encourages young people to believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their dreams.

“If you have an idea, take the risk. Embrace the learning opportunities that come with both successes and setbacks. Dare to chart your own path, rather than blindly following established norms.”, Mr. Virak advises.
